Recipes for a Vegetarian Diet for Dogs?
My dog can’t eat meat because of his bowel system, it gives him bad diahorrea. However I was wondering if it was ok to feed him pasta and veggies instead of dog biscuits or just in case I ran out!

Dogs are carnivores. Do NOT feed your dog a vegetarian diet. Feed him a super-premium brand dry kibble.

you should talk to your vet about nutrition for your dog, they will know best on what to do.

What does your vet say?
dogs are not vegetarians……check with a vet before you keep your dog on just biscuits and pasta.
Did a vet tell you NOT to feed your dog meat? Diarrhea is a symptom of whatever is going on in your dog’s system…do him a favor and get him checked out.

Dont give him table food. They can develop pancreatitis that is caused from eating too much table food. If the vet has told you that it is the meat that is causing this then get what ever the vet recommends you to get but if you are just guessing that is what makes him sick then take him to the vet and see what they have to say

out of curiousity, have you tried a well-balanced, quality dry dog food?
May 6th, 2011 at 7:17 PMi have an 11 yr old that can’t tolerate ANY moisture. but as long as he gets just the CANIDAE dry he does great.

Dogs are not vegitarians, so I’d talk to your vet first. Some dogs can’t handle beef, but can eat lamb. Veggies are good for your dog, but shouldn’t be the main part of his diet. And I don’t think pasta would be good for him all the time, it’s too starchy and fatty.
May 6th, 2011 at 7:17 PMDog biscuits should also not be a mainstay of a dog’s diet. They are meant as TREATS, which means occasionally. They don’t have the proper nutrition a dog needs

Try a very high quality veg. dog food. I think nature’s recipe has one. I know you can get it at the big pet store chains like petsmart.
May 6th, 2011 at 7:17 PMJust re read your question. You give him dog biscuits? But he can’t eat meat? So, all he’s been eating is dog biscuits? Maybe it’s just the food you had been feeding him. What brands were you feeding when it was decided it’s the meat? We’re really trying to help!

any home cooked diet needs to be appropriately balanced. my little one has extreme food allergies and is on home cooked diets. one of her diets is a vegetarian formula of black beans and sweet potatoes. she is a 7 pound dog so she has to eat 2 cups of the 50/ 50 mixture. the mixture also has 1/8th teaspoon of salt per cup as well as 1 teaspoon of walnut oil per cup. however, this diet alone is not balanced and she has to get 1/2 of a centrum everyday.
there are commercial vegetarian diets available such as natural balance. it does not contain any soy, wheat, or corn and is completely balanced.
aslo, have you tried a hypoallergenic meat such as venison, duck, rabbit, bison, or pheasant?

You need to find a type of meat that your dog can eat. Dogs are carnivores and lack the ability to properly digest plant protein making meat ESSENTIAL!
May 6th, 2011 at 7:17 PMTalk to your vet before you make any major diet changes like that.
mutts rule!!
you need to ask your vet, most dogs have to have meat in their diet…i’ve never heard of a vegetarian dog. doesnt sound right.

why not try a fish based food to see if he tolerates that, dogs need a good protein source in their diets, veggies are not enough and the carbs should be limited.

I would get you dog to the vet and get him tested. If he can’t eat meat he could be allergic to pasta.
My dog can only eat rabbit meat, salmon and duck nothing more.
Have them do a skin test and blood work on allergies with both results you can determin what is not safe for him to eat.

This is not a simple question.
First, did the vet tell you your dog cannot eat meat, or are you assuming it?
It sounds like your dog is living on dog biscuits–is that true? If so, this is not good. And, if eating dog food seems to have given your dog diarrhea, there are many dog foods that are specially formulated for more sensitive stomachs. Human food often does not agree with dogs, and does not give them proper nutrients. Dogs require meat. As do cats. Pasta and veggies would be better than starving, yes. But that’s about it. A much better idea would be to see that you do not run out of dog food, just as you do not run out of your own food, or would not run out of baby formula, if you had a baby.
Your dog depends on you to provide proper nutrients for health. That means dog food, not people food. Find a dog food that does not give your dog diarrhea. Talk to a good pet store, like PetSmart, they’ll recommend some foods to try. Do not give your dog a vegetarian diet unless your vet has told you that you must. In that case, I am sure your vet will give you very specific instructions on how to feed your dog to keep him healthy. Otherwise, find a food that agrees with your dog, and stock up on it. It may take some trial and error, but your reward will be a happy, healthy dog.
